Question 5

5) How did you attract/address your audience?

I thought with my audience profile i didn't have to put overly bright colours to attract them so my large black and white masthead would attract the audience on first glance. After the audience has seen it and takes a second look they would see 'BURNHAM' and 'THE COMEBACK' which would make them take a look at the picture too see who Burnham is if they didn't already know. As they look over the cover them will see a selection of bands who are featured in this weeks issue which would either make them keep looking or look away depending on there music taste. The clothing worn by my artist would attract and older audience as he's dressed smart.

Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

What kind of media institution might distribute my media product?

IPC media is the sort of distributer that I could see distributing my magazine. They distribute over sixty ‘iconic media brands’ including NME, Nuts, Marie Claire and many more. The magazine produced is read by two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK men. This shows they have a wide range of magazines and they are a well known distributor world wide. I think this will suit my magazine because IPC media distribute NME magazine and my magazine is targeted at a similar audience. They have the experience and skill to take magazines nationally as they have before with numerous magazines and although my magazine is aimed at a specific audience I am looking to make it mainstream like NME.

Why?

They have already distributed NME magazine which is a similar magazine and has a similar target audience to my magazine and they were successful at that, making NME one of the most well known magazines on the market. I think they would do a good job of distributing my magazine and with the success of NME i think they would want to distribute my magazine due to the similarities.

Question 4

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

I aimed to make my audience be between the ages of eighteen to twenty four. I chose on this age range because eighteen is when people tend to start socialising more and going to gigs with their mates and around twenty four is when you start to go out with your mates less. The sort of person in this age range my magazine is targeted at is someone who goes to a lot of gigs and festivals, enjoys indie music and likes to keep up to date with what is happening week by week in music. The audience would be older teenagers to late university students, who stand out in a crowd due to individuality. This could be anything from the way they dress to how they have there haircut.

Question 2

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine represents the same sort of social groups as NME and Q magazine does, a more of a indie style. My artist is wearing sophisticated clothing, I got this idea from looking at Esquire magazine as every cover model wear a suit and I liked the look of it on a cover. After deciding on the look of my artist I had to choose a genre of music, which I was going to decide on an R&B style because this how they are styled on magazine covers but then I looked into the older bands like the Beatles, The Who and The Jam. This made me decide on an indie/alternative artist because the model I used looks like he fits the indie genre rather than R&B. With this genre i aimed at a white, middle classed social group who like bands like oasis, beady eye and the libertines.

Evaluation question 1

1. in what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Before starting my mock I researched indie magazines like NME and Q magazine which my brother buys every week. This helped me pick my target age as before I researched the magazines I was going to have a starting age at seventeen but as my brother is fourteen and reads NME week in week out so I changed my target audience to fourteen to twenty four year olds as I feel that there is an audience for my magazine, even at the age of fourteen but then i reviewed this die and found out the majority of fourteen year olds do not read music magazine like NME and Q just a select few so i changed my target audience back to my original audience which was seventeen year olds to twenty four year olds. The masthead going across the top left hand side of the page is bold and in blocked capital letters the catch the reader’s attention this is similar to the font used by NME for their masthead. It is a masculine font, which I used because my magazine is targeted at more of a male audience. My model is wearing smart clothing making him look like a successful artist which appeals to my target audience.

Mast head-I used a large black and white masthead as it suited my cover as i stuck to a black and white look from my models clothing to the writing filling the page.

Cover lines- i put the cover lines on the left of the page underneath the masthead as the masthead will catch the audience attention and they will instantly look down towards the cover lines.

Sky line- This is used by most music magazines it attracts the sort of audience my magazines appeals to aswell as being about 'the greatest 10 frontmen of all time' which is relevant as my model as posing as a frontman.

Main feature- My main feature is situated underneath the masthead and the words 'BURNHAM' and 'THE COMEBACK' are written in large, bold font standing out to the reader. It is written to the left hand side of my artist so the reader knows who 'BURNHAM' is.

I used a mixture of the blocked writing used by NME and the boxed effect used by Q magazine to design a masthead for my magazine.

I got my idea of my artist wearing smart clothing from looking at Esquire covers and in particular Robert Downey Jnr's cover.

I was also inspired to do my front cover black and white from a Esquire cover of Daniel Craig but without the bright masthead.

The cover lines are the same on most music magazines, i used a variety of different fonts and sizes but kept the same black and white look.

Layout Conventions:

The layout i used was based on how Q magazine laid out there Jay Z front cover. I have a sky line going across the top saying 'The 10 greatest frontmen of all time' and Q used one that said 'The 10 most exciting people in music now'. Both Q's and my masthead is in the top left corner to catch the audiences attention instantly. Underneath the masthead are cover lines going to the bottom of the page, ine is in black and white where as Q's is a mixture of different colours. My image of my artist takes up the right side of the page, Q's takes up mainly the right side of the page.
